Happy new year guys, hope you all had a great Christmas. I’ve had a manic first week to the new year and Im already wanting another few weeks of not doing anything haha! My New Years resolution was to post more on here, and build up the girl in the hound on social media into the place I want it to be, and this of course includes thrifting, and yet again as I’m about to start sharing it with you all…we go into another lockdown! If you follow The girl and the hound on Instagram, you’ll have seen me post this photo the other day, with my intentions for The girl and the hound, and it dawned on me, I’ve never ever shared this incredible dress on here! So I may not be able to share many new thrifting adventures but I sure can share some from last year.
I picked this dress up in summer when the charity stores re opened. It was from one of the Cancer Research superstores, normally everything is under £3, they sometimes have a “gold ticket” rail/shelf but I’ve found this can be a little random! This dress had been added to the size 14 rail, I’m a size 8-10 but ALWAYS look at all the size rails, this dress didn’t have a size in it, so the staff had (wrongly) guessed the size, and it’s so easy to be like “That’s not my size, I won’t look over there”. If you are use to shopping in high street stores, you may be in the mindset when looking through the rails, “Oh no they don’t have my size” and you walk away. Here in a charity store, they only have one of that item, so you kind of start not noticing the size in the label, and you tend to judge the actual garment instead, because you know its the only one, you really like it, and your willing it to fit! so it’s always worth trying it on, even if it isn’t “your size”. Plus sizes in general are so all over, from the brand to even the age of the item, it all makes the sizes differ, I have sizes from 6-16 in my wardrobe, and I really do not mind, I’m just happy to have a wardrobe full of beautiful clothes that I got at ridiculously good prices! Now back to the dress, when I saw this dress, my heart stopped, the victorian street scene pattern was the most perfect pattern I’d ever seen. I didn’t even really look at it, I just grabbed it and ran over to Nathan and told him how I don’t care if this dress fits me or not, for £3 I’m having it and will use the fabric for a skirt if its too big! It wasn’t until I got it home and really looked at it, I realised this was from the 1950’s- even more exciting, but I had convinced myself that it was too good to be true and it was not going to fit me. However when I tried the dress on, it was like it had been made for me, the fit was perfect and it was so flattering on my figure. When you have genuine vintage dresses you really do realise how poorly made modern day clothing is, vintage dresses really were made to flatter the body, and the quality is far far superior to todays fast fashion! I love the square neckline and the slightly lower waistline, I honestly feel amazing in this dress. I can’t find another online at all, I’ve found something similar for $295! but its not the same. It just blows my mind that a 70 year old dress can still look this good, and I plan on keeping this dress forever.
Hopefully this year I’ll actually be able to wear it somewhere other than the garden!
Much love
