Our master bedroom has been completed for a while now, but I haven’t quite got round to sharing it on here, so before I delve deep into Christmas decor, I thought it was time to share the journey of this beautiful room. So grab a cup of tea and a biscuit or two, this could be a long post!
When we first saw this room, like everything else in the house, it was tired, and again like every other room, the photo I took at the time, did not show it at all! The wooden floors may look okay in the photos on here, but trust me, they were absolutely awful, rough, gaps, nails and staples everywhere, they were not suitable for a bedroom floor.
The first thing to change was the window. Unlike the front of the house, which has the original windows, the back of the house has pvc double glazed windows, however they were all from the 1980’s, so in desperate need of an update, not only to help with the energy rating but also to make them safer.
The next stage was to paint the room magnolia with the white above the picture rail. We stripped back the peeling wallpaper to find the walls had previously been painted black, which of course was a little bit of a shock!
After, I don’t know, how many coats, the black was finally gone, and the walls were looking bright and fresh, but I felt like the room needed a feature, a little personality. So I decided to add faux paneling to the wall.
I decided how many panels I would want on the wall, measured the wall and divided it by this. We literally drew the panelling onto the wall, so that I could be sure of the thickness of the mdf we were going to use, and to check that the amount of panels looked correct for the size of the wall. I then purchased the MDF from my local wood store who also cut it to size for me. We attached it to the wall with adhesive as well as nailing it too. I then filled between the gaps of mdf and sanding it smooth, as well as filling down the edges of the pieces of mdf, to make it flush to the wall for painting.
I wanted the room to have a spring feel to it, as it always has beautiful light coming through the window, so I decided on a green and pink colour scheme for the room. After trying so many different swatches, I painted the faux paneling in Valspar soothing sage. I always find it hard to pick greens, as they’re often too yellow or too blue, but this green seems to be the perfect green for the light in this room.
I wanted to add the pink elements with not only accessories but with the bedside tables too. I picked these bedside tables up for only £15 for the two, I sanded them back, stained them and added a pink chalk paint to them, to create a distressed look. I applied it using the side of my paint brush, which creates a more natural look look without the need of sanding. We also put darker furniture in the room, for a strong contrast against the pink.
And here is the finished room! I absolutely love the feel of this room, its relaxing, calm and cosy, but at the same time bright and fresh. I am so glad I added the panelling, I really think it makes the room. The dark dresser was a buy from a local charity shop, and I know so many pieces of furniture like this get painted these days, but I love the striking contrast of adding dark furniture to a light room, plus it is in such amazing condition it would have been a shame to paint it. The antique chest was another charity shop pick up too, it cost me £15, and because we have chosen not to have much storage in this room, it’s great for keeping extra bedding in.
Again, so many second hand purchases in this room! if you follow me on social media, you may have seen I have a few of the chairs, I bought the set from marketplace for £15, they’re really beautiful and have casters on the feet, a few of them need the fabric trim reattaching but they’re great for adding to a corner of a room to make it a little feature. The lampshades and throw were all purchased from charity stores as well, I honestly did not think I was going to stumble upon two matching vintage lampshades in perfect condition, but it just shows you never know what you’re going to find thrifting! I purchased the headboard from Ebay, there’s many sellers selling these types of headboards, and they are so much cheaper than the high street, I was also able request fabric swatches and pick the finish on the buttons too.
The pink lady on my dresser, was my Grans, and it used to sit on her dressing table, so I really wanted it to be a feature of this room, the whole colour scheme was based around this vintage talc holder!
I hope you like my bedroom makeover, let me know what you think, and also let me know if you’d try your hand at the faux panelling!
