I love heritage railways, I’ll be honest, I know nothing about them, but I could visit them and ride them all the time -I want to know more, and need to learn! My great and great great Grandads were both railway men in North Yorkshire, so maybe its the connection I feel. We often visit the stations along the North York Moors railway line, as they are beautiful and steeped in history. This week we decided to stop at Goathland station, and take it in. I love how each station has its own character, and Goathland does not disappoint. Depending on your age, you may know Goathland as Aidensfield from the tv show Heartbeat, or you may know this station as Harry Potters very own Hogsmede!
Of course you can always ride the train too, it starts in Pickering and ends in Whitby, but we also really love visiting the stations and soaking in the atmosphere. Even if you decide to ride the train, which can I add has some of the most beautiful scenery across the moors, I’d also put a day in the diary for visiting just the stations, Pickering, Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont, plus each has a beautiful village too. You’ll often find the station masters and other volunteers on the platforms too, who are always super friendly and ready for a chat. Also it’s great for anyone who is on a budget too, if you can’t quite stretch to a ticket for the train this time, it’s still a great way to enjoy the railway with your family.
Much love
